由于新加坡本国陆地面积很小,致使军队的训练演习不得不常常在海上进行。而海军的坦克登陆舰在这样的训练中便承担了部队及装备运输的重要任务。但目前新加坡海军现役的坦克登陆舰均是二战时建造的陈旧产品,运输速度慢(巡航速度只有8节)、战斗能力差,且维护保养费用高昂,因此新加坡海军急需一种快速高效的运输平台装备部队。“忍耐”级新型坦克登陆舰是由新加坡海军技术公司设计,计划建造4艘。首舰“忍耐”号已于1998年
