鹦嘴鱼,属鲈形目科,体侧扁,一般呈长椭圆形,口不能向前伸出,两颌齿多数愈合成齿板,齿板表面存有较多尖锐的细齿,因其与“鹦鹉”的口齿甚为相似,故名“鹦嘴鱼”(parrot fishes)。在我国,主要分布在广东、广西、海南等沿海水域,现已发现和记载的有二十余种,如杜氏鹦嘴鱼、青宽额鹦嘴鱼、鲍氏鹦嘴鱼等等。鹦嘴鱼通常栖息于珊瑚礁中或者岩礁之间,主要以珊瑚、海胆、虾、贝类等无脊椎动物及藻类为食。
