以前的各种压实装置的缺点是不能在深坑道、探井、沉井的底部进行压实作业,因为刚性操纵工作装置(如液压单斗挖掘机的动臂、斗杆)长度有限,对于大批量生产的机械来说其长度不超过3~5m。此外,压实效率不高,这是因为原设计的工作装置的压实力不可能超过压实机和工作装置的总重量,所以,这种压实装置必须提高压实力,使其能进行有效的压实,而不应受工作装置长度、重量以及压实表面深度的限制。为了在任意深度的沟内作业,提高压实效率,设计了新型压实装置。
