Earthquake monitoring in the first area of the Three Gorges Project Reservoir has been carried out for 46 years and is rare in the world history of hydropower. The comprehensive analysis of 46-year seismic monitoring data shows that the first area of reservoir before storage is a typical low-frequency weak earthquake area, whose epicenters are spatially mainly distributed on both east and west of the Zigui Basin. Most of the causes belong to natural Earthquake. After the impoundment, the frequency of seismic activity increased significantly, and the intensity remained at the background level before impoundment, with the maximum earthquake being only ML2.4. The spatial distribution of seismic activity has great changes compared with that before the impoundment of the reservoir. The seismic activity mainly distributes in the block of cattle mouth to the Wushan pebble in Badong.
