利用低品级金刚石也是降低金刚石钻探生产成本的一项重要措施。我大队曾购买一批低品级的人造金刚石，其抗压强度为8000—9000公斤/平方厘米。曾委托武汉探矿厂烧结金刚石钻头。我大队共使用这种钻头32个，取得了较好的技术经济效果。在9级为主的石英闪长岩（有少部分8级闪长岩与11级细粒花岗岩脉）地层钻进，平均钻头寿命54.49米，超过九十米的钻头有六个，其进尺分别为96.2～175.32米，占钻头总数的19％。其中1979年一○二机使用的四个钻头，平均钻头寿命达到84.24米，平均时效1.92米，达到了较高的水平。
