Texas Instruments Inc. plans to make a monolithic mobile phone by 2004 that integrates sound and multimedia capabilities. The company announced that the company’s management will discuss the development of wireless handsets and PDA integration in future conferences. Tom Engibous, Chairman and CEO of TI, referred to the plan at Salomon Smith Barney’s 2002 Technology Industry Conference in New York. Although the progress made in miniaturization makes the function of several chips can be integrated into one. However, system designers often demand that additional functionality be added to the system while increasing the number of chips. Moreover, the modularity and economics often favor the use of multiple chips, which technically could have been monolithically integrated. Engibous said TI will outperform its competitors in the wireless semiconductor market due to our very advanced milestone, including the development of a monolithic mobile phone in 2004. By combining TI’s state-of-the-art process technology with complete system concepts, we can enable our users to simultaneously transmit voice, data and multimedia images of wireless phones and PDAs without adding size and power consumption.
