In a recent report titled “Optical Chips: Pushing Technology and Markets from Semiconductors to MEMS, Nanophotonics and Photonic Crystals,” Pioner Consulting said IC sales for optical switch applications will reach $ 5.4 billion in 2006. The market technology assessment report that the sales of optical ICs worldwide will grow from 645.3 million U.S. dollars in 2002 to 5.43 billion U.S. dollars in 2006. The report points out that ICs based on semiconductors now have a market advantage over integrated optics based on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), nanotechnology and related technologies. MEMS chips made by companies such as Agilent, Silicon Light Machines, Net-work Photonics and Umachines will challenge semiconductor-based ICs in the small-port-count optical switch market.
