上海,不仅仅是一座东方标志性意义的大都市,而且是一个符号、一个故事、一段记忆、一种经验,存在于100多年的文本之中。文本是通过上下文的关系来确立其意义的,在很大程度上,上海正是这样一个被赋予了意义的城市——近代以来,它被赋予了诸多的现代性意义,尤其是国家的现代化象征,主导了人们对于上海现代性的理解。
Shanghai is not just an iconic metropolis of the East, but also a symbol, a story, a memory, an experience that exists in more than 100 years of text. Text establishes its meaning through contextual relations. To a large extent, Shanghai is just such a city that has been given its meaning.
