The Wei and Jin dynasties were a period of dazzling calligraphy in Chinese history. This paper argues that the great accomplishments in the art of calligraphy originated from the prevalence of Taoism in that period and the influence of Taoism in the princely clan politics. This paper selects Wang Xizhi as the analysis perspective to discuss how the religions (Taoism) and art (calligraphy) in the Wei and Jin Dynasties converged under the influence of philosophy (Taoism). How religious beliefs (Taoism) emerge in art (calligraphy) eventually yield their own conceptual forms (Taoist ideas).
