“美国梦”是美国人共同的追求梦想,是美国人的精神支柱,也是美国文学的一个恒久的主题。在“美国梦”的初期,它强调人人只要努力奋斗,便能取得成功这一个人奋斗主义的精神内涵。然而,随着资本主义社会的发展,利益至上的社会现实令很多人的梦想都成为了泡影,因此“美国梦”的幻灭成为很多美国作家笔下的主题。作为美国自然主义小说的代表作家德莱塞的作品就反映了人们从满怀梦想到梦想破灭的这一主题。德莱塞用自然主义的写作手法,深刻地揭露了下层美国人民破碎的“美国梦”。
“American Dream ” is a common pursuit of the American dream, is the spiritual pillar of the Americans, but also a permanent theme of American literature. In the early days of the “American Dream,” it emphasized that everyone should strive for success and achieve the spiritual connotation of success as a personal struggle. However, with the development of capitalist society and the social interests of supremacy, many people’s dreams have come to nothing. Therefore, the disillusionment of the “American Dream” has become the subject of many American writers. The works of Dreiser, the representative writer of American naturalistic novels, reflect the theme of people from dreams to dreams. Dreiser profoundly exposed the broken “American Dream” of the lower American people with naturalistic writing techniques.
