陳嘉庚(一八七四——一九六一年)是愛國華僑領袖,福建廈門集美鎮人。他曾長期僑居新加坡,從事橡膠種植與橡膠用品製造及貿易、海運、新聞等業。一九一○年他在新加坡参加同盟會;一九一一年為支持辛亥革命,在新加坡任福建保安會會長,曾籌款資助孫中山先生。一九三一年‘九·一八’事變後,他在新加坡召開僑民大會,進行救國活動;一九三八年他在新加坡倡立‘南洋華僑籌賑祖國難民總會’,並選為主席。抗戰勝利後,他創辦《南僑日報》。一九四九年陳嘉庚出席中國人民政治協商會議第一屆全體會議,晚年回國,歷任中央人民政府委員、全國政協副主席、全國人大常委會委員、華僑事務委員會委員、中華全國歸國華僑聯合會主席。一九六一年八月十二日陳嘉庚在北京病逝。
Tan Kah Kee (1874 - 1961) is a patriotic overseas Chinese leader and Jimei Town, Xiamen, Fujian Province. He has long lived in Singapore, engaged in rubber planting and rubber products manufacturing and trading, shipping, news and other industries. In 1910 he joined the League in Singapore; in 1911 in 1911 to support the Revolution, in Singapore as Fujian Security Association, had raised money to finance Dr. Sun Yat-sen. After the Incident of September 18, 1931, he held a diaspora in Singapore to help save the country. In 1938, he initiated the ’Overseas Chinese in Nanyang Region to Relieve the Migrants’ Homeland of the Fatherland, “which was elected as Chairman in Singapore in 1938 . After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he founded ”Nanqiao Daily". In 1949, Tan Kah-Gah attended the first plenary session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and later returned to China. He served successively as a member of the Central People’s Government, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, a member of the NPC Standing Committee, member of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese Chairman. Tan Kah Kee died in Beijing on August 12, 1961.
