对于研究中国西北部乃至整个亚洲中部地区历史、民族、民俗、美术、宗教等方面的学者来说,马·奥·斯坦因(M.A.Stein,一八六二——一九四三年)的古物搜集品和考察报告已是不可缺少的原始资料。这位出生在匈牙利的犹太人,从一九○○年开始,以英帝国学者兼教育家的身份(一九○四年正式加入英国籍),曾对中亚(主要是中国新疆、甘肃等地)地区进行过四次探险性考察,其结果,是导致大量中国西北文物流落到欧洲和印度的一些著名博物馆与图书馆中。对斯坦因运往国外的文物进行整理、编目与研究,是当今国际敦煌吐鲁番学所重点研究的课题之一。
For scholars studying history, ethnicity, folklore, art and religion in northwestern China and the entire Central Asia, Antiquities by MAS Stein (1862-1943) Collection and inspection reports are indispensable sources of information. The Jewish born in Hungary, from 1909 onwards, became an English imperialist scholar and educator (who formally joined the British in 1940). He once told Central Asia (mainly China’s Xinjiang and Gansu provinces ) Area conducted four expeditions, the result of which was a flood of large numbers of well-known museums and libraries in Northwest China that fell to Europe and India. The sorting out, cataloging and research of the relics transported by Stein to foreign countries are one of the key issues studied by the current International Dunhuang Turpan Studies Institute.
