Brazil was once one of the countries with the most disparity between the rich and the poor in the world. In order to change this situation, since 2003, the Brazilian government has taken poverty alleviation as the focus of its work and continuously increased investment in social projects. It has brought 20 million people out of absolute poverty in 7 years, 31 million people in the middle class and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. The result of Brazil’s narrowing of the poverty gap is praised by the UN and President Lula was awarded the “Global State Activist” Award at this year’s Davos World Economic Forum for its successes in the social field.
