Since the discovery of the Iwukuya site in 1949, more than 1,000 Paleolithic sites have been found in Japan. In addition, over 10,000 Jomon sites have been discovered and reported. So far, about 300 cave and rock shelters have been discovered and about 2% have been studied. The first briefing on the Japanese cave site was published by Domoto Panxiong in 1934. As the Japanese Archeological Society set up a group devoted to the study of burial sites, the interest in burrowing reached its peak in 1962.
