This article describes the architecture of a multi-microprocessor system with a tree structure, a large general purpose computer system that organizes an unlimited number of monolithic microprocessors (modules). It is pointed out that the tree structure with interconnected paths is particularly advantageous, and its effective bandwidth is inversely proportional to the logarithm of the number of microprocessors. A kind of tree structure called X-Tree is used as a model for the study. This system can provide a hierarchical structure for control, addressing and messaging. The communication network between microprocessors is explored, namely a set of high-speed, byte-parallel communication links that exchange asynchronous messages. In the X-tree system, each node consists of a more powerful microprocessor, a switch network and a dedicated communications controller. Also discussed the network topology, routing algorithms, addressing schemes, information formats and other issues.
