In 1981, the fracturing fluid used in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) was a high-quality CO 2 emulsion added to a hydrated ethanol-based gel. Since then, the use of fracturing fluids has been very successful, especially in low-pressure tight gas reservoirs. This fracturing fluid, in addition to all the benefits of traditional high quality CO 2 foam / emulsion, also reduces the amount of water entering the well. This article will discuss another emulsion, the hydrated methanol-based liquid and liquid CO 2 emulsion. Discussions include the chemistry of emulsions, rheological calculations, and the successful application of sediment basins in western Canada in the last 10 years.
