儒学号称名教,“名”之于儒,意义重大,先秦时期,社会变迁使得物是人非,名实淆乱,无所适从。道术为天下裂,礼崩乐坏,孔子主张“正名”。战国时期,对于“名”的争论尤为核心,黄老刑名之学有之,名家有之,墨经有之,法家有之,荀子亦有正名之论。儒家“正名”的话题最重要的来源是子路问政(《论语·子路篇第十三》)。然就儒学有注疏开始,对论语之“必也正名乎”一章注解亦不能统一。这种不统一的原因有
