1993年,经王朔推荐,冯小刚第一次看到刘震云的小说《温故1942》。小说反映的是1942年的一场灾难。太平洋战争进入第二年,中国抗日战争处于战略相持阶段,此时河南大旱,千百万民众外出逃荒,最终300万河南人死于饥饿。读完以后,冯小刚产生了要将其拍成电影的强烈愿望。18年间,数次拍摄动议都因故搁浅。2000年,影片获华谊兄弟支持启动,期间甚至一度建组,但两年后剧组工作还是无奈暂停。冯小刚感慨18年时间,“小刘小冯变成了老刘老冯”。
