This article examines how Gaborone grew from a small village to the capital of Botswana in less than 30 years. The question of concern is how the careful design of the master plan dictates the direction of development of the city and reflects the needs and aspirations of the residents. By adopting appropriate and feasible urban development policies, standards and regulations, an easy-to-control environment has emerged. The city can be proud of having a fully modern downtown and commercial center; infrastructure with modern functions (including water, electricity, roads and sewage treatment systems); virtually all people have the opportunity to use the land; The government and the private sector provide adequate housing, and two very successful plans for low-income people (household settler housing improvement plans and self-help housing plans). Despite its rapid development, through careful management and development of control measures, the development of the city has been well controlled. The city’s future expectations are quite bright.
