济南地区的佛教石窟造像,作为济南地区佛教文化的重要遗物,必然要在一定程度上反映出不同时期佛教发展变化的不同情况。这乃是它在佛教文化史研究方面的价值所在。表现在造像的性质和风格方面,除具有中原地区造像的一般特征以外,也还必然具有一定的地区特色。这正是艺术风格源流研究所不可缺少的一个方面。并且,在国内隋代和唐初石窟造像遗迹严重缺乏的情况下,济南地区的隋代和唐初造像却相当集中、完整,因而,济南地区石窟造像的研究,也就在我国石窟艺术史中有其特殊的意义。本文的目的即在于以尽可能全面、科学的调查,尝试以类型学的方法,对全部调查材料作具有年代学和风格学双重意义的分期研究,进而初步摸清该地区石窟造像在不同时期内的题材、性质、风格流变情形,及其与国内其他地区石窟造像的渊源关系。
