福建省泉州市开元寺大殿的西廊有棵古老的桑树(Morus alba L.),是该寺重要的古迹,享有“佛国名传久,桑莲独擅声。”之誉。开元寺建于唐垂拱二年(公元686年)。据《晋江县志》记载:“寺址本是黄守恭的桑园……。”古桑在建寺之前就已种植,树龄至今有一千二百多年。泉州古桑为雄株,树皮粗厚,黑褐色,基部直径2米,分二校主干,一枝曾被雷击两半,心材已朽,直径各约1米以上(左图)。另一枝未伤者,高约8米,胸径70多厘米。一般桑树为
