The authors demonstrated a test-tube method for automatically measuring muscle contractility in a study of the effects of inhalation of a halothane anesthetic followed by calcium chloride or magnesium sulfate on isolated left atrial muscles of Guinea pigs. Automated computerized control system was used to collect the muscle contractility waveforms, and the contractile waveforms were analyzed to compare the changes before and after administration.
