潘基文的顺利当选,一个重要原因是他来自韩国,人们对他解决朝鲜核问题、从而稳定朝鲜半岛的局势抱有很大的期待第二位亚洲籍秘书长10月9日,经过四轮意向性投票后,联合同安理会15个成员同以鼓掌方式,一致同意向联大推荐韩国外交通商部长官潘基文担任下一任联合国秘书长。潘基文如此顺利当选新的联合国秘书长,这在联合国历史上颇为罕见。
