现代对村志的研究启蒙于20世纪90年代末,形成并发展于90年代,新世纪之后进一步发展。学界对村志的研究集中在:一是针对某一新编村志的宣传报道和评价;二是针对旧村志的研究;三是针对村志编纂的意义与价值的研究;四是针对村志编纂的过程和面临的问题的研究。但是对村志的研究还存在一些问题,主要是:研究数量不足;新闻报道类文章所占比例较高,现有研究不够深入,未能形成体系;对村志编纂所涉及的具体问题研究不足,研究方法较为单一;研究主体集中在各地的地方志工作机构,合作度不高。村志的研究仍然需要社会和学术界的关切、重视和更为踏实更为深入的努力。
