This paper introduces the process of developing and applying the water level control model by nonlinear optimization and finite element simulation. The model is developed to control the water level of the river and to improve the power generation conditions of the radial flow plant. RWE Energy has incorporated this methodology into Decision Support Systems (DSS) for real-time control of shipping and power generation in the Moselle region of Germany. The system’s application reduces the cost of several million euros needed to dredge the river to ensure its normal shipping depth. A brief introduction of the model in the test and operation of the process and experience. He also pointed out that the vigorous support of relevant agencies and personnel is necessary in order to provide the necessary data and equipment during the implementation process.
