Introduction Over the past decade, great progress has been made in seismic stability analysis of dams and embankments. Newmark and Seed proposed an analytical method for estimating the permanent deformation of a dam under seismic action and suggested that it be used as a criterion for the performance of a dam and a safety factor based on the principle of limit equilibrium.
