Dr. Xie Shangping from the University of Hawaii, Professor WT Liu from NASA, Professor Liu Qinyu from Qingdao Ocean University, and Dr. Masami Nonaka from the University of Hawaii collaborated to discover a phenomenon that has not been discovered and revealed by the predecessors: the rare in the atmosphere and the ocean to the west of the Hawaiian Islands “Wake” (the “trail” refers to a narrow “weak wind band” west of the Hawaiian Islands) and a narrow eastward flow from the western Pacific to the Hawaiian Islands. The findings were published in Science on June 15, 2001, entitled: “The Long Term Impact of the Hawaiian Islands on the North Pacific Ocean - Atmosphere.” The study was completed on the basis of the cooperation between Chinese and American scientists and was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
