Glycyl-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (also known as galactose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase) is a key enzyme in the Leloir pathway in lactose metabolism. The imidazole ring of histidine (His ~ (164) and his ~ (166)) in the active center is a nucleophilic catalytic group that catalyzes the interaction between glucose-1-phosphate and UDP- Lactose forms galactose-1 -phosphate (Gal-1-P) and UDP-glucose, and 5-phosphate uridine group is transferred in the reaction.
