1 十九世纪末二十世纪初,即我国历史上清末民初之际,是我们民族史上的多事之秋。封建势力的垂死挣扎,帝国主义列强的疯狂瓜分,改良主义的进退维谷以及资产阶级民主革命的勃然兴起,使华夏大地局势空前动荡。苏曼殊正是在这个特殊的历史时期出现的一位萃集民主革命者、僧人、文学家于一身的“奇人”。
From the late nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century, that is, from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republican China’s history, it is a matter-of-autumn in our national history. The dying struggle of the feudal forces, the frenzied division of the imperialist powers, the advance and retreat of reformism and the bourgeois-democratic revolution have brought the situation on the Chinese mainland unprecedentedly turmoil. It is precisely in this special historic period that Su Manshu emerged as a “strange man” who brought together democratic revolutionaries, monks and writers.
