明清时期,就有天桥,居中轴线,跨龙须沟,为皇帝祭天祀农通行专用。清末民初,周边市井文化和往来商贸聚集,渐成北京特色风俗民情代表地区之一。后因时代变迁,几经改建,桥体及两侧御碑尽遭毁弃,该地有名无桥已近百年。而今,正值国家文化繁荣发展时期,经专家论证,公众评议,并结合道路交通现状,修建天桥文化景观于原址南侧,再现中轴地标,旨在抚今追昔,继往开来,让城市在历史印迹中不断发展。
