我们所称的无子西瓜,是指西瓜的种子或幼芽,用药剂处理后经过栽培,其所结的瓜,种子很少,而且种子变得很小,又是不着色的嫩(?)子。这些西瓜便于生食,品味佳美,可称为高级品,应该受到市场上的好评。所以无子西瓜是自从人类栽培西瓜起四千年以来未曾有的新产品(西瓜是非洲热带地方的原产,早在四千年以前,已在埃及开始栽培)。在日本1949年始有无子西瓜销售于东京市场上。当初大家觉得很稀奇,但近几年来,种植无子西瓜的人,已渐多起来,据最近报道,日本无子西瓜的栽培面积,在1957年已达到100町步(每町步合中国14.88市亩)。
