在近代中国新闻史上,创刊最早的外文报纸是1827年鸦片贩子马地臣创办的《广州纪事报》,但影响力最大的当属1950年创刊,并在中国发行了整整一百年的《北华捷报》(后改名为《字林西报》)。《字林西报》在其创刊后的一百多年时间里,一直是中国沿海报界的执牛耳者,无论是它的社论观点还是排版样式,抑或经营模式,都引领了一个时代的潮流。不仅代表租界侨民发出了他们的声音,而且引起了上海滩的报业大爆炸,推动了中国报业的发展。
