In the 17th century British drama by John Webster’s Italian drama “The Duchess of Malfoy,” the actor Ferdinand suffered from wolf madness after he persecuted the dutifully remarried sister, Princess Malfoy. This description is often misinterpreted as a proof of Webster ’s preference for meaningless terrorist plots. In fact, it not only contributes to the construction of Ferdinand’ s image, but also reveals his motive for persecuting his sister and also expresses Webster ’ The vision and the hostility to Catholicism provided important clues for people to understand the shaping of the main figure Ferdinand, Webster’s moral consciousness and the socio-cultural background of the play.
