防风是中医临床常用药物之一,对大多数人来说,与人参、虫草这些名贵药材相比,防风几乎是“默默无闻”。但在临床用药时,防风作用独特,应用广泛。防风为伞形科多年生草本植物防风的根,其气微香,味微甘。以条粗壮、皮细而紧、无毛头、断面有棕色环、中心色淡黄者为佳。防风主产于我国东北、河北、四川、云南等地。其中以黑龙江、吉林、辽宁,内蒙古(东部)所产的称关防风或东防风,品质最佳。一般在春秋季采挖,晒干切片,生用或炒炭用。现代研究证实,防风含挥发油类、甘露醇、β-谷甾醇,苦味苷、酚类、多糖类及有机酸等成分,具有解热、镇痛、镇静、抗菌、抗炎、增强免疫和抗过敏作用。
