玳玳花属芸香科,5~6月间开花,花白色,形较小,有浓香。它的花可用于制作花茶,提取的香精为高级香料。果扁圆形,幼嫩时青绿色,冬季成熟时转黄色,到翌年夏季又带绿色而增大,其果往往数代生于同一株树上,如管理得当,经4~5年不腐烂凋落,富有观赏价值。其果皮也可提取高级香料香油。1
