Laos longs for the help of other countries in economic development in order to reduce its dependence on Vietnam and the Soviet Union. It opened the door to private companies in order to attract more foreign trade, investment and technology. Vientiane has taken steps to improve its relations with Thailand, China, the United States and other countries that have major contradictions with the veteran leaders who came into power 13 years ago.
