科学学科的发展进程一般不会是直线式的。在学科的迅速发展或变革时期,学科的内部将产生一些发展最迅速的领域。这些领域成果累累,其理论、方法甚至名词术语对其他领域产生很大影响,从而带动整个学科的发展或变革。这些迅速发展的领域可称为学科的理论前沿或学科前沿。学科前沿住往能产生强大的向心力,吸引这个学科的大量优秀理论家,改变着他们的理论兴趣。
The development of science disciplines in general will not be linear. During the rapid development or change of disciplines, some of the fastest growing fields will emerge within disciplines. These areas are fruitful, and their theories, methods, and even terminology have a great impact on other areas, driving the development or change of the entire discipline. These rapidly developing fields can be called the theoretical frontiers or the frontiers of disciplines. The cutting edge of the subject lives in a great number of outstanding theorists who generate a great deal of solidarity and attract this discipline, altering their theoretical interests.
