女画家的书画是中国美术不可缺少的一个组成部分,但在封建统制的数千年中,女性由于重重封建伦理道德的束缚,其才华发挥受到了极大的限制,作品的流传亦受到影响,因此在有画史记载的一千多年中,仅仅流传下来了管道升、仇珠、柳如是、薛素素等数十人而已。当历史的车轮进入近现代之后,大量专业美术院校的成立使女性拥有和男性一样进入学校接受美术教育的权利,女画家开始不再鲜为人知,而女画家的创作范围也不再局限于人物和花鸟,在绘画的各种形式和题材创作中都有了女画家的出现。
