中国科学社创建人之一,著名语言学家赵元任先生1892年11月3日生于中国天津,1910年赴美留学,1914年毕业于康奈尔大学数学系,1918年获哈佛大学哲学博士学位。先后在哈佛、康奈尔、北京清华、夏威夷、耶鲁及密歇根大学任教。1947年起任教于加州大学柏克莱分校,1981年2月25日于马萨诸塞州剑桥访亲时逝世。元任先生著作等身,终年89岁。他生前的日记目前珍存于加州大学伯克利分校。根据日记所写的《赵元任自传》记载了他一生的重要活动,包括赵先生自己认为极关重要的科学社活动。现以崇敬的心情将元任先生在自传中涉及中国科学社在美创立经过的有关记载,摘录如下,并略加注释,以纪念父辈挚友赵元任先生对科学社所作的巨大贡献。
Renowned Chinese philosopher Zhao Yuanren was born on November 3, 1892 in Tianjin, China. He studied in the United States in 1910, graduated from the Department of Mathematics at Cornell University in 1914, and received a PhD degree in philosophy from Harvard University in 1918. Has taught at Harvard, Cornell, Beijing Tsinghua University, Hawaii, Yale and the University of Michigan. He taught at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1947 and passed away while visiting his family in Cambridge, Massachusetts on February 25, 1981. Mr. Yuan Ren works equally, at the age of 89 years. The diary before his death is currently stored at the University of California, Berkeley. According to the diary “Zhao Yuanren autobiography” recorded his life’s important activities, including Mr. Zhao himself think is extremely important science society activities. Now I respect Mr. Yuan Ren involved in the autobiography related to the founding of Science Society in China, the relevant records, excerpted below, and a slight note to commemorate his great friend Mr. Zhao Yuan Ren made a great contribution to the Society.
