上世纪80年代初,改革开放刚刚起步,世界对“封闭”了几十年的中国还不十分了解。1984年12月,主要收录邓小平1976年以后一些带方向性、政策性讲话的《邓小平文集》英文版首次在国外出版,为外国人重新认识中国提供新的视角。邓小平在文集序言中所说的一段平和而又真诚的话——“我是中国人民的儿子,我深情地爱着我的祖国和人民。”也成为伟人感动世界的经典语录。然而不为人所知的是出版此书的历程并非一帆风顺,而是波折不断。本文口述者周尔鎏先生当年是我国驻英国大使馆文化参赞,曾为《邓小平文集》英文版出版事宜与英国出版商多次沟通,最终促成此书顺利出版。
In the early 1980s, China had just started its reform and opening up and the world did not know enough about China for decades. In December 1984, for the first time in English, Deng Xiaoping's English version of Deng Xiaoping's Collected Works with mainly directional and policy speeches since 1976 was published abroad to provide a new perspective for foreigners to re-recognize China. Deng Xiaoping said in the preface to the collection of a gentle and sincere words - “I am the son of the Chinese people, I am deeply in love with my motherland and people.” “It has also become a great quotation touched the world. What is unknown, however, is that the process of publishing this book is not plain sailing, but twists and turns. This essayist, Mr. Zhou Erhuan, was the cultural counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom. He had communicated with the British publishers many times for the publication of the English edition of the ”Deng Xiaoping's Collection," which eventually led to the publication of the book.
