The election of a liberal president may signify a major shift in the South Korean government’s policy toward North Korea. According to preliminary results, the liberal South Korean liberal politician won the country’s presidential election on Tuesday (May 9), ending a decade dominated by conservatives and possibly reshaping the country’s policy toward North Korea. Up to midnight local time, 34% of the ballot papers have been issued. Wen Yin won 39% of the vote, up from 27% of conservative candidates and 22% of centrist candidates. Wen Yinyin said: “This is a great victory for the great nation. We work together to build a just, united, principled and common nation.”
