In 1988, the first security-related incident in the world of the Internet, the worm, took place and thousands of hosts with Unix operating systems were compromised shortly after the worm’s outbreak. After analysis, the worm invaded a system using a debug backdoor and an error on the string-handling functions in the BsdUnix email program, and then booted the worm’s main code into the system. This incident shows that mail security is closely related to the security of other Internet applications and therefore attracts the attention of more and more security experts and researchers. This article will review with readers the e-mail security incidents that have taken place in recent years, hoping to play a warning role.
