白居易,字乐天,号醉吟先生,他是我国晚唐时期的一位伟大诗人。他于唐代宗大历七年(公元772年)正月二十日,出生于河南新郑县东郭村。他卒于唐武宗会昌六年(公元864年),享年75岁。中国有句俗话,“人生七十古来稀”,他在中国古代人的寿命中,算一位长寿老人了。 白居易的长寿原因,应从他的晚年去追寻,他最珍惜这段生活。他在青少年随父任职时期,曾颠沛流离异乡,由于唐朝的战乱,他12岁时,曾离家避难越中。“衣食不足、冻馁并重”的贫困生活,使年轻的白居易,产生了对劳动者的同情。他在29岁时,赴长安考取了进士,从此走上了仕途,在各地为官长达近3O年。因为官廉洁,深为各地百姓爱戴。他在杭州任刺史时,筑堤挖井,造福人民。西湖的白堤,即是人们缅怀他的纪念物。
