1.戏剧要在人的精神层面上展开。我们在剧场里的任务就是要创造人的精神世界。演员的“精神真实”才是最大的真实,表面的真实(容貌、化妆、服装等)与“精神真实”相比,是次要的。2.戏剧是一种“视听艺术”?剧场中的听觉因素明显要高于视觉因素。在上千个座位的大剧场里,座位偏远的观众很难用肉眼看清舞台上演员的容貌。而演员的声音必须让每一个观众都能听得清清楚楚,这是话剧得以实现的最基本的条件(所以在话剧剧场中,观众必须保持安静)。无论舞台做得多么炫目,话剧演出也只能是几个演员在舞台上走来走去,与电影相比,话剧肯定是单调、枯燥的。舞台不可能像电影银幕一样去往任何地方,只能通过暗示和象征来突破舞台的物理局限。这说明舞台是接近于诗歌的,暗示和象征是它的天然语言。

This shows that the stage is close to poetry, suggesting that the symbol is its natural language.
