《天才、狂人的梅毒之谜》一书大胆提出,贝多芬、舒伯特、舒曼、玛丽·塔德、亚伯拉罕·林肯、福楼拜、莫泊桑、凡·高、尼采、希特勒……这些历史上的天才或狂人,他们共同遭受一种疾病的罪与罚——梅毒。他们忍受极度的痛苦与狂喜的兴奋,有时沮丧得相要自杀,有时变成妄自尊大的偏执狂,到了末期还会发疯。因此,梅毒深深影响他们的世界观、性行为与人格,当然也影响了他们的创作。
