名播天下的普陀山,是我国四大佛教圣地之一。公元858年,日本高僧慧锷从五台山请得尊观音菩萨像乘船回国,途经普陀山莲花洋面时,突然海面上出现了层层铁莲花,船不能行,慧锷心悟观音不肯东渡去日本,遂上岛在潮音洞附近一张姓渔民住宅内供奉,以后又扩建为一座寺院,称“不肯去观音院”。从此,普陀山就成为供奉观音菩萨的道场,千百年来香火不绝。后经历代兴建,寺院林立。
