[Objective]To study the analgesic effects and acute toxicity of essential oil from Helleborus thibetanus Franch.[Method]The analgesic effects of essential oil were tested by hot plate test and twisting body test;the modified Karber’s method was used to evaluate LD 50 .[Result]The essential oil from H.thibetanus could significantly reduce the mice writhing response induced by acetic acid and enhance the mice pain threshold of hot plate stimulation.LD50 of essential oil from H.thibetanus was 8.50 ml/kg;and 95%confidence interval was 7.20-10.00 ml/kg.[Conclusion] The essential oil from H.thibetanus showed significant analgesic effects and had relatively low toxicity.
