October 12, 1993 The Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that it will award this year’s Nobel Prize in Economics to Professor Robert W. Fogel of the University of Chicago and Douglass C. North of the University of Washington in St. Louis ) Professors in recognition of their use of modern statistical methods and economic theory to re-examine the process of economic development results. The Nobel Prize Committee has considered both of them for 10 years. This year’s decision was an astounding decision that broke the tradition for many years and for the first time awarded the Nobel Prize to the study of economic history rather than narrow economic studies. This is because the studies by Professor Fogel and North prove the importance of a stable system for economic growth and have a significant impact on politics. At the same time, it also reflects that economists are increasingly attaching importance to the role of the social system in providing an organizational structure for economic growth. Professor Fogel was born in New York in 1926 and received his Ph. D. in 1963 from Johns Hopkins University. He taught at Johns Hopkins, the University of Rochester, the University of Chicago and Harvard University. He returned to Chicago in 1981 as a director of the Walgreens Foundation in Chicago, Illinois, and has been director of the Center for Population Economics at the University of Chicago. Professor Fogel pioneered the application of rigorous statistical techniques
