OBJECTIVE: To determine the bone density and mechanical properties of prednisone-induced osteoporosis in rats. Methods: Sixteen 3-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 345-3 347 g were randomly divided into control group and experimental group. The latter was fed with 4.5 mg / kg prednisone acetate twice daily. After 90 days, the two groups of animal femurs were measured by single-photon bone density and torsion test. Results: The BMD of proximal, middle and distal femur decreased by 12.4% (P <0.05), 13.9% (P <0.05) and 11.9% (P <0) in experimental group .05); Anti-torsion femoral shaft indicators have shown a decreasing trend. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term use of GC results in a decrease in bone mineral content, which is susceptible to fracture due to changes in bone architecture that reduce its ability to resist twisting
