The U.S. Air Force has been involved in the development of a laser alert capability program for its units and recently signed a $ 400,000 research and development contract with Trakar Aerospace Corporation. However, the contract is an exploratory development of the tail-end laser warning system. Therefore, it can not be expected to become an actual combat equipment for at least the next six years. The Air Force also collects data from numerous laboratories and industries, including Eglin Air Force Base and Air Force Tactical Operations Center using on-board test results from the tail-end alarm system provided by the industrial unit. The tests include field emission testing of infrared and radio-frequency tail-end warning systems. Some observers believe the tail-end alarm system will eventually be purchased to provide infrared, radio frequency, and laser alerts. It is expected that the Air Force and Navy will start buying the tail-warning system in fiscal year 1992 or 1993 and that the Department of Defense is expected to be able to supervise and urge the units to purchase the system under a unified plan. In the meantime, the Army continues to purchase the AOR-2 laser warning system for helicopters from the Army and Marine Corps from Hughes Danbury (formerly PerkinElmer). Army also signed three with Hughes Airlines
